Background

Settled in 1832 on the banks of the Sangamon River, Mahomet is the oldest community in Champaign County. A rural residential community of 7,258 where the zip code is larger than the community and estimated at 13,300 residents, Mahomet appeals to those in search of an atmosphere of country living, shopping and working with added convenience of a cosmopolitan environment, lying just 10 miles away from Champaign-Urbana.

Tales of the early days on the Grand Prairie are brought to mind while exploring the antique shops on old Main Street or the Early American Museum. The Mahomet School District has 2,678 students in grades K-12, 185 instructors and 10 administrators, spread over five schools. The school colors are orange and blue and the school mascot is a bulldog.

Higher Education

Parkland College

Parkland College is primarily a two-year college offering vocational and transfer degrees in over 100 different areas. Parkland also offers advanced degrees through partnerships with Eastern Illinois University, University of Illinois at Springfield, Franklin University, Olivet-Nazarene University, and Greenville College. Parkland also offers nine sports teams and numerous student organizations.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of the preeminent research universities in the world. Eleven alumni of UIUC, including nine university faculty, have been named Nobel Prize Laureates, and 18 alumni and two faculty members are Pulitzer Prize recipients. UIUC campus is also home to the largest public university library in the world, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, the renowned Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and 19 Division I sports teams.

Mahomet is home to the Early American Museum, public library, two golf courses, Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve, hiking trails and much more. The Champaign County Forest Preserve boasts more than 3,500 scenic acres throughout the county.
