The Champaign County Economic
Development Corporation welcomes W.
Newell and Company to our region.
Corporate officials and business
leaders had the opportunity August
15th to attend a ribbon cutting
celebrating the opening of the new
facility. W. Newell & Co., named
for Supervalu’s original parent
company, Winston & Newell, will be
based at the new $25 million
distribution center in the Apollo
Subdivision. The 155,000 square
foot warehouse will serve 700 stores
in a 7 state area and is a
subsidiary of SUPERVALU.
Industry veteran Gary Gionnette
leads W. Newell & Co. as its chief
operating officer. With a “passion”
for the produce business, Gary
brings a unique combination of
experience in all aspects of the
industry: retail, wholesale and
distribution. During his 30-year
career, Gary has helped drive the
success of SUPERVALU’s produce
distribution business, as well as
serving in senior roles at other
preeminent companies in the
industry.
Celebrating its 135th
year of fresh thinking, SUPERVALU
INC., a Fortune 100 company, is one
of the largest companies in the
United States grocery channel. With
annual revenues of approximately $20
billion, SUPERVALU holds leading
market share positions across the
U.S. with its more than 1,500 retail
grocery locations, including
licensed Save-A-Lot locations. With
its Save-A-Lot format, the company
holds the number one market position
in the extreme value grocery retail
sector. Through SUPERVALU’s
geographically diverse distribution
network, the company provides
distribution and related logistics
support services to nearly 4,500
grocery retailers across the nation.
In addition, SUPERVALU’s third-party
logistics business provides
integrated end-to-end supply chain
management solutions that deliver
value for manufacturers, consumer
products retailers and food service
customers. SUPERVALU currently has
more than 58,000 employees.
Supervalu will consolidate the
produce volume from five surrounding
facilities into the new produce-only
center. Produce shipments will be
aggregated from distribution centers
in Pleasant Prairie and Green Bay,
WI; Ft. Wayne, IN; St. Louis, and
the existing facility in Champaign.
Following the opening of the
regional produce center, the five
facilities will continue to operate
as full line centers supplying all
products and services, but for
produce. We have been very
fortunate to have the opportunity to
work with Mike Guth at our Urbana
SUPEVALU location and look forward
to working with W. Newell and
Company. The Champaign County EDC
congratulates Supervalu on their
success and appreciates their
investment in our region.
